Paul Newland

A Brief History

Paul's interest in music began when he heard Queen’s "Fat Bottomed Girls", on Radio Caroline at a Scout camp in 1978. On hearing Roger Taylor's ferocious drum break his life was altered forever. Surrounded by kids wearing shorts, scarves, woggles and Yes badges, Motorhead T-shirts and Saxon hats, he soon developed the sort of interest in Heavy Rock that only Boy Scouts can get away with. In 1979 he started smashing away at old Blue Peter annuals with two extra large 'QE2 Silver Jubilee pencils', trying to keep up with Neil Peart and Phil Collins. You can vote for your favourite drum solo and see if it's the same as Paul's. Lurching on to 1987, Paul played drums in numerous appalling Duran Duran influenced combo's, until he decided all the songs were shite and left.

He soon developed a taste for leaving bands on a regular basis, especially realising that playing synthesizers and dancing (a la Jesus Jones) as he was asked to do for Django Rise, was extremely tedious. He even tried fronting his own band and playing lead guitar (with Stormcock), but continual jokes from pals about Neil Young tribute bands proved all too much (but were arguably perfectly understandable).

He decided to 'go solo' after realising that all drummer jokes are true, rehearsal rooms are ultimately tedious and depressing, and musicians don't like him or his songs anyway!!

An extremely tall man, Paul has a fondness for Real Ale, petite dark-haired actresses, the sea and Indian cuisine. Hey! Why not vote for your favourite side dish here:
